We regularly see visually handicapped people using a cane to walk. It helps them navigate spaces and steps preventing them stumbling into objects, holes or people. But it can only detect objects that are at a low level and this leads to upper body injuries. Smartcane is an innovation coming from India that has found a solution to this problem. Assistive Technologies Group (Assistech), Indian Institute of Technology Delhi is behind the innovation and now having partnered with NGOs and trusts are giving away these smartcanes to visually impaired people who find it much better than their traditional canes.
